EU Plastic Packaging Recycling Reached 42.4% in 2024, Eurostat Reports
Eurostat's 22 October 2026 release reports that the EU recycled 42.4% of the plastic packaging waste it generated in 2024, compared with 41.6% in 2023. The result is an increase of 0.8 percentage points. It is a useful measure of the waste system, but it does not describe how an individual plastic bucket is sorted or how much recycled resin it contains.
The figure in context
Eurostat puts 2024 EU plastic packaging waste at 35.9 kg per person, with 15.3 kg per person recycled. Both amounts increased from the previous year. The release covers waste from the wider economy, including businesses and households, rather than only household collection. The rise in recycling rate therefore should not be read as a fall in packaging waste generation.
Three measures a packaging specification should not confuse
- Recycling rate: the share of a measured waste stream that was recycled. The 42.4% figure is an EU-level statistic for a particular year.
- Recyclability: how a particular packaging configuration is assessed for collection, sorting and reprocessing in the relevant market. A body material alone does not settle that question.
- Recycled content: the share of material in the actual package from recycled sources, with the basis and evidence defined for the specific claim. It is not the same as recyclability.
For example, a report on EU waste does not establish that a particular printed PP food bucket is collected locally, uses a given percentage of recycled plastic or meets food-contact requirements. Each claim needs its own evidence.
How to turn the news into a useful design review
Start with an existing SKU, not a material slogan. Document the current lid, label, handle and body before choosing a change. If you want to compare direct printing with a label or change the handle material, prepare a drawing and a physical sample for each candidate. Record the resulting performance and appearance alongside the intended market's recyclability assessment.
Use the same fill, closure and carton configuration when comparing candidate packs. A lighter or simpler component may help one design objective, but it should not be approved if it introduces failures in filling, opening, storage or transport. Set acceptance criteria before comparing samples.
